DUE TO continuous snow fall in the upper reaches and rain in the plains, intense cold conditions worsened the life of the people in Chenab Valley. In many parts of Jammu mercury dipped and the night temperature slipped to minus.
Non-availability of essentials made life even tougher as people alleged shortage of Kerosene oil and fire wood .The poor people suffer the most because they can not afford to buy luxury gas heater items for winter days and have to depend on fire wood fuel.
Previously, in Bhaderwah and other parts of Chinab Valley, wood was made available at wood stalls run by the forest department or purchased from horsemen, but this time the department has made no such arrangement.
As a result, poor people are suffering for want of fuel, said a social worker Khursheed Ahmed. The forest department could manage the sale of firewood very easily for people by collecting the same from the forest area.
There are hundreds of fallen trees in the forest which are rotting and no timber is extracted from such fallen trees. If the same are transported to the forest office premises where the stalls sold firewood at reasonable rates, it would facilitate and provide fuel wood to needy people and also fetch income to the department.
The fallen trees rotting in the jungles are a national loss and nobody is in favour of it. Beside firewood, the forest department can turn fallen trees into timber and sell it to the people who need the same for the construction of their houses at cheaper rates on the pattern followed by Himachal Pradesh and thereby save the fallen trees from going waste. By doing this, the illegal cutting of green trees by mafias in co-operation of corrupt forest officials can be stopped in the forests of Bhaderwah said Suresh Gupta, Vice President, Bhaderwah Development Action Committee.
Meanwhile, PCC state general secretary Mehraj ud Din Zargar criticized PDD department for unnecessary power cuts in Bhaderwah, Thathri, Kahara, Gandho, Banihal and other far-off areas of Chinab Valley and demanded immediate action against the PDD officials who try to create confusion and misunderstanding among the common masses regarding the government plans
