JEWS HAVE strongly criticised the European Commission and the European Parliament for ignoring the Hindus in the inter-faith gathering held on May 11, in Brussels to discuss ethical contributions for economic governance. Rabbi Jonathan B Freirich, a prominent Jewish leader in Nevada and California, supporting the cause spearheaded by the acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, said in a statement that the Commission and Parliament leaders should study their constitution carefully to find the words “equality” and “fairness” written somewhere and grasp their meaning.

Rabbi Freirich argued that it was not the job of the Commission and the Parliament to prefer one religion over the other or ignore some of those completely in inter-religious gatherings. The Commission and Parliament officials needed to go back to school to take “Comparative Religion 101” and “Interfaith Relations” classes.

The Jewish leader further said, “How could one ignore Hinduism, which is one of the oldest religions of the world with about one billion followers and a presence in every country of Europe? Hindus have made many positive contributions to the European community and believe in peaceful co-existence.”

Rabbi Freirich stressed that the Commission and Parliament officials should write to Rajan Zed, who is the President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, apologizing for this mistake and unfair treatment and assuring that unethical practices like this would not repeat in future. The European Commission and Parliament reportedly invited only Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders to the inter-faith discussion on “Economic and Financial Crisis: Ethical Contributions for European and Global Economic Governance", co-chaired by Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Parliament President Hans-Gert Pöttering.

International media does cover violence against Indian Muslims and Indian Christians by militant Hindus in India in the name of modern Hindutva nationalism. It does not escape the attention of Western media that BJP supporting Hindus share the ideals of militant Hinduism. The Nazis of Germany are still fresh in everybody's minds. All the talk of Aryan superiority is familiar to Western countries which were involved in Second World War by the "Aryan" superior race. Bigotry is not considered "cool" in the West. They do not call militant attitudes and discrimination on the basis of religion, " progress."

Two points must be noted here: If only Christians, Jews and Muslims were invited, it means that the definition was: Abrahamic faiths. Hindus have been excluded because Abrahamic faiths consist of only Jews, Christians and Muslims. The second point to be noted is that Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs have been excluded as well. There are almost more Buddhists now than there are Hindus, especially in the West because Buddhism is becoming a very popular religion in the West. Many Far Eastern countries are Buddhist.Increased support for militant Hindutva style Hinduism through support for BJP is going to do peace loving Hindus a lot of damage like terrorist attacks by a few Muslims brought bad name to all 1.2 billion Muslims around the world.
