International Day of Cooperatives: Towards sustainable societies through cooperation
The United Nations (UN) proclaimed International Day of Cooperatives is going to be celebrated with the theme of 'Sustainable societies through cooperation', notified the UN ahead of the observance on July 7.

According to the UN, it is due to cooperatives' values, principles and governance structures; they have sustainability and resilience at their core, with concern for community.

"At a time when income inequality is rising around the world, it is good to be reminded that solutions to inequality do exist. The co-operative model is foremost among these solutions, since it contains aspects of sustainable development at its core and is based on ethical values and principles," urged the UN the members of cooperatives around the world gearing up to celebrate the International Day of Cooperatives.

According to the UN, by their very nature, cooperatives play a triple role: as economic actors they create opportunities for jobs, livelihoods and income generation; as people-centered enterprises with social goals they contribute to social equity and justice; and as democratic institutions, they are controlled by their members, playing a leading role in society and local communities.

"Despite their local community focus, co-operatives also aspire to bring the benefits of their economic and social model to all people in the world. Globalization should be governed by a set of values such as those of the co-operative movement; otherwise, it creates more inequality and excesses that render it unsustainable," cautions the UN.
