International Day of Families: Emergent need for family life education
The International Day of Families (IDF) was observed on May 15 to mark the importance of families with events organized at local, national and international levels with the theme decided by the United Nations.

This year, the IDF has been observed with the theme, "Families, healthy lives and sustainable future" to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

It was in the year 1994; the International Year of Families was established by the United Nations. The symbol often used for the observance consists of a solid green circle with an image in red with simple drawings of a heart and a house to indicate that families are the center of society and provide a stable and supporting home for people of all ages.

"Unfortunately in urban centers, the life has become fast and socially isolated that the 'family life education', which earlier used be the part of social learning within the joint and extended families, has become a part of formal institutionalized education or online education revolving around the topics like parenting, sexuality education, life skills, emotion and feeling management skills, care giving nurturing skills, marriage preparation or readiness education, health education, inter-personal amity education, work-family relationship education, care-giving to elderly family members, bereavement or grief education and many more," said Prabha Kishore, Jaipur-based educator and developmental psychologist.

Many university departments offer multi-disciplinary courses with 'family life education' as subject. For example, IGNOU in India, IGNOU has family life education as a part of courses on HIV/AIDS, adolescence education, social work, etc. In academic circles family is regarded as care-giving social unit consisting of a couple; a mother, father and children or a single parent and child or grandparent and grandchildren along with a sibling group.

On the occasion of IDF, I did a bit of internet browsing to enhance my own knowledge and created a sketch note for future reference which is given here. A sketch note combines both textual and visual note-taking to represent a topic through drawing pictures with concept mapping. It is a kind of communication on paper as visual-narrative notes.
