The UN initiated International Day of Non-Violence was observed on October 2 to create awareness about non-violence as the means for achieving peaceful resolution of differences and positive outcomes all over the globe.
INTERNATIONAL DAY of Non-Violence (IDNV) is UN initiated global observance to create social awareness about the significance of non-violence in public and private life. Each year the event is celebrated on October 2, which is also Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. The United Nations recognizes the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi in promoting non-violence and peace.

The UN promoted the day with a logo showing the world map with includes five concentric circles that is inscribed in a wreath consisting of crossed branches of the olive tree symbolizing peace. Ahead of IDNV, an event entitled “Non-Violence as an Instrument of Social Change” was organised by the UN.
Here are the basic principles of non-violence.
A: Avoiding use of physical violence to achieve social or political change
B: Building public awareness for non-violence education and social action,
C: Complying with doctrine of non-violence as a tool for the peaceful resolution of differences
D: Deploying the method of non-violent resistance for social justice campaigns
E: Efficacy of non-violence as an Instrument of social change and effective governance is well recognized.
