International Day of Yoga: UN announces "Yoga for Health'' as theme for 2017
The International Day of Yoga (IDY), recognised as the worldwide observance by the United Nations, will be celebrated with the theme 'Yoga for Health' on June 21 this year.

The IDY is meant to raise awareness across the world of the many benefits of practicing yoga. Over the last few years, yoga is being practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

"The theme for the 2017 celebration, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is 'Yoga for Health.' The theme highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving equilibrium between mind and body," stated the UN on its website.

According to the UN, Yoga as an 'approach to health and well being can make a direct and useful contribution to humankind's quest to achieve sustainable development and move towards lifestyles that are in harmony with nature'.

It may be recalled that the UN General Assembly had declared 21st of June as International Yoga Day in December in 2014.

Yoga is an ancient Indian practice, considered to be around 5,000 years old practice for mental, physical and spiritual unity and harmony.
