INTERNATIONAL NURSES Day is being observed across the world today with the theme 'Closing The Gap: Increasing Access and Equity'. The main objective is to appreciate the contributions made by nurses towards building a healthy society and to provide quality health care to patients.
Throughout the world, the International Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6 to 12 and each year, and on this day a prayer service is held at Westminster Abbey in London. As part of the service, a ceremonial lamp, which is obtained from the Nurses' Chapel and handed over to nurses, who then give it to the Dean, who places it on the High Altar. The passing of the lamp from one hand to another marks the sharing of knowledge and passing of it from one nurse to another. One reason that Nurses Day is observed on May 12 is the fact that it is the birth date of Florence Nightingale, who is considered to be founder of modern nursing as it is seen today.
During the nursing week, the people are made aware of the prime role played by these key stakeholders in the health care industry. Nurses form the backbone of the health infrastructure and this week is also observed to hold seminars, educational programmes and campaigns to benefit these professionals. Nurses are also privileged on May 12 as they are given gifts, flowers and official dinners by their organisations. In India, a number of events are being held across the nation to mark this week and the International Nurses Day.
