International Nurses Day: Learn to draw visual symbol of a nurse
As the world celebrates the International Nurses Day (IND) on May 12 to mark the birth anniversary of legendary nurse Florence Nightingale and highlight the contributions that nurses make to the society.

The IND is being celebrated since 1965. However, the nursing students celebrate two events in May two times - National Student Nurses' Day on May 8 and ICN on May 12. In certain cities, even a nursing week is observed.

In primary schools, students have to learn the names of various professions and 'nurse' is one of them. However, the teachers do not take up the activity of drawing the visual symbol of a nurse.

A visual symbol is a not real but a simple two-dimensional line drawing representation of the reality for quick communication.

This IND, proceed as follows for four-step drawing visual symbol of a nurse:

1. Draw capital U for face and on top draw a five-side figure to represent the cap.

2. Add a bust structure below U shape.

3. Add bob hair by the side of the face.

4. Add details like red-cross symbol on cap, two dots in U to show the eyes and smiling lips like the ones in a smiley.

The visual symbol can be used for visual communication or as flash card for building sight vocabulary of kids.

Here, I leave you with three quotes on nursing to mull over on IND.

  • "I attribute my success to this; I never gave nor took any excuse." —Florence Nightingale
  • "Every nurse was drawn to nursing because of a desire to care, to serve, or to help." —Christina Feist-Heilmeier, RN
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." —Mahatma Ghandi
