•Event Description: International Volunteer Day (IVD) provides an opportunity, every 5 December, for volunteer-involving organizations and individual volunteers to work together on projects and campaigns promoting their contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels. •Location: Global •UN Sponsor: United Nations Volunteers (UNV) •Other Sponsor: UN Country Offices, NGOs, civil society, local and national governments. •Activities: Various events/activities. IVD committees and community groups plan and organize a broad range of IVD events like fundraising for specific causes, i.e. HIV/AIDS, street children, clean-up drives, etc. and organizing related activities. The events are as diverse as the volunteers and groups that engage in the celebrations.On the occasion of IVD, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his message, "Forty years ago, the United Nations General Assembly called for the establishment of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme. Since then, tens of thousands of UNV volunteers have contributed to our global mission, working with many UN organizations, programmes and agencies as well as peacekeeping and special political missions. I commend the engagement of these committed volunteers."According to UN, IVD offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions at local, national and international levels to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
