March 8 is a day for appreciating women and their selfless service. Be it on the professional, domestic or social front, women have created a niche for themselves, which has led to the celebration..
SHE MAY be a mom, a daughter or jack of all trades but above all roles she is a woman.
Every year March 8 is celebrated as ‘International Women’s Day’ but this year is special as we are observing 100 years of its declaration.
The first Women’s Day was celebrated on March 10, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In 1913 an agreement was confirmed to transfer Women’s Day to March 8 and gradually all the countries started celebrating it.
1975 was celebrated as International Women’s Year and the big event developed with the aim of improving the status of women in the patriarchal society. In some countries such as China and Nepal, it is a holiday for women, and in several countries it is compulsory for men to give some gift to the women they love and care on this day. In countries like Romania this day is equivalent to Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers. Chocolates and yellow mimosas are the most common gifts on this day in Western countries.A woman who works for the welfare of the family that makes the society, truly deserves a day in their name. They demand nothing in exchange to what they give but their value is hardly known by anyone. Men have always been dominating over women, with increasing cases of sexual harassment and molestation, women need to stand up and raise their voices against it. International Women’s Day is a great way to raise such kind of problems women face, and to show our gratitude towards women of the world. If we can celebrate Valentines Day, Childrens Day, Rose Day with great enthusiasm, why not Women’s Day?
