International Women's Day: Some thoughts to ponder on
It is International Women's Day (IWD) today (March 8) to promote equal rights among women. In respect purpose of observing IWD, a woman scribe, Susmita Baral says, "It's important to acknowledge how far the women's rights movement has come, and also address that there are still many more issues that require equality. In our humble opinion, International Women's Day stands for more than equality for women, but equality for all so that no gender, or subgroup of any kind, has to feel prejudiced and discriminated against."

In other words, the stress should be on social equality or the equality of full humanity of women and men.

Gandhi Ji was also a staunch supporter of women empowerment and gender equality. He once wrote in the then famous periodical Young India, "To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man's injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her, man could not be. If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with woman. Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman?"

Here are some quotes on women to reflect on the occasion of IWD this year:

"Remember the dignity of your womanhood. Do not appeal, do not beg, do not grovel. Take courage, join hands, stand besides us, fight with us." - Christabel Pankhurst

"The fastest way to change society is to mobilize the women of the world." - Charles Malik

"Whatever glory belongs to the race for a development unprecedented in history for the given length of time, a full share belongs to the womanhood of the race." - Mary Mcleod Bethune

"Being a woman is a terribly difficult task, since it consists principally in dealing with men." - Joseph Conrad

"Every man I meet wants to protect me. I can't figure out what from." - Mae West

"Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings." - Cheris Kramarae

"In politics, if you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman." - Margaret Thatcher

"When a woman becomes her own best friend life is easier." - Diane Von Furstenberg

"You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation." - Brigham Young
