Internet freedom as a human right: Human Rights Council of UN passes resolution
The Human Rights Council (HRC) of United Nations based in Geneva has passed the resolution on Internet freedom called the 'Promotion, Protection and Enjoyment of Human Rights on the Internet'(PPEHRI) .

THE HRC has urged the world community of nations to support individuals' rights online as much as offline and treat internet freedom as a human right. The resolution faced main opposition from China, Russia and India. The US supported the resolution to the hilt.

While reacting to the HRC resolution, the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated, "This resolution is a welcome addition in the fight for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms online."

Hillary Clinton feels that the free flow of news and information is under threat in many countries around the world due to government censorship and persecution of individuals for their online opinions and actions.

Besides the US, the main backers of the PPEHRI were Brazil, Nigeria, Sweden, Tunisia and Turkey.
