Q. What attracted you most about the script of "Poorna"?
Rahul: (With a smile on face and looking towards Poorna) Honestly, I just can't believe a 13-year-old tribal girl from Telengana made it to the highest mountain in the world. She is phenomenal. She did it from a place where mountaineering is nowhere, literally nowhere. Having no basic idea what mountaineering is, then doing just 8 months of training a 13-year-old girl reached the peak of Mount Everest and made a world record. Isn't it unbelievable? I think it's an inspiration to everyone.
Q. But I heard that you initially had been offered the role you played in the film but …
Rahul: (By stopping me midway) Yes. That's the feat of Poorna. When I had been offered the role, the story touched me like never before. Then I decided to produce and finally to direct it.
Q. Poorna, what was your initial feeling when you first heard that a film was going to portray your life on celluloid?
Poorna: Actually, I have never thought that my life can be so interesting amongst people. Therefore, I met Rahul Sir for the first time in Hyderabad and he told me about the story. I felt really very very excited.
Q. And how did you feel when you saw the film for the first time?
Poorna: It was 24th of March, I went to see the film with my family and after seeing the film, I couldn't resist my tears. It's a dream come true for me.
Q. Rahul, how Poorna personally supported the project?
Rahul: She is superb. I don't even expect that much from her. When we finally selected Aditi Inamdar to play the lead, Poorna wholeheartedly trained her to climb the mountain. She travelled everywhere and now during promotions too. She always supported with a smile on her face.
Q. The music of your film has again created a positive buzz everywhere like Zakir Saab's music in "Everybody Says I Am Fine". Why are you so choosy about music?
Rahul: Music is very important and this time music has been composed by my friends Salim-Sulaiman. I really couldn't afford them but they managed with very little money and they created magic as you heard too.
Q. You are always dead against of gender discrimination and batted for gender equality and women empowerment. Is this the core feeling that mixed up with a women centric storyline?
Rahul: At first I thought of it as a great story, great biopic. It's also right that the terms you mentioned are very much in-thing too. But firstly, I think of it as a story of an underprivileged, under-educated, tribal girl who proved that if you dream of anything cordially then you can accomplish it definitely. It's a tale of inspiration, a fairy tale indeed. So, can't there be more Poornas everywhere? May be the sector will be architecture, sports, science anything. I want to see Poornas in every field who will conquer their desired Mount Everest.
