SENT IN to bat first, Chennai Super Kings, scored 146/5 in 20 overs against a spirited Royal Challengers Bangalore, led by veteran Anil Kumble at the New Wanderers Stadium. Hayden and Parthiv Patel gave Chennai a solid start but the middle order failed to convert the starts into a big score. Chennai lost Patel when he was on 36 and Hayden got out when he was on 26, after the duo provided a cracking start to the Super Kings.
Hayden slammed 26 runs off 19 balls with the help of a six and two four. Manish Pandey took Hayden’s catch at deep midwicket off Vinay Kumar. Patel followed soon and two wickets fell in quick successions before the strategy break. For a change it was Patel who stole the limelight with a swashbuckling 36 but was removed by Kallis in the 9th over. Dhoni and Raina played cautiously and kept the scoreboard moving. Raina fell to Praveen Kumar when he was on 20. Dhoni had to work hard for his 28 runs which were scored off 30 days and did not include a single boundary or a six. He was caught brilliantly in the deep off Roelof van der Merwe.
Albie Morkel chipped in with a brisk 20 off 17 balls. Chasing a modest total of 147, Ross Taylor (17*) and Viral Kohli(24*) ensured Royal Challengers home in 18.5 overs.
Manish Pandey (48) the newly discovered young sensation and The Wall, Rahul Dravid, displayed some exquisite shots and kept the scorers busy all throughout.
Pandey, who became the first Indian to slam an IPL century, missed his first fifty when he was bowled by Shadab Jakati. He scored seven fours in his magnificent innings of 48. Dravid hit six fours in his 44 run and was later dismissed by Muralitharan. The duo added 50 runs in just 34 balls which included some lusty shots.
Royal Challengers lost Jacques Kallis when he was on 9 runs when he edged one to Parthiv Patel behind the stumps off Manpreet Gony. Roelof van der Merwe who was promoted and sent up the order did not last long and was bowled off Albie Morkel’s delivery. The previous delivery he was dropped by Murali at mid-off and was not able to take advantage of the chance he got.
On Friday, Adam Gilchrist led Deccan Chargers to a 6-wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils and stormed into the final. On Sunday the finals would be played between Deccan Chargers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore. A must watch final, between both the teams who were on the bottom on the table in the last edition of the IPL.
