IPL Teams Preview: Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians
Excitement about the IPL is gradually building to fever pitch and teams are busy lining up their..

THE INDIAN Premier League, which has come a long way since its inception in 2008, is considered as one of the most awaited sporting extravaganzas in the country. There are only 5 days for the IPL season 5 to start. It is going to be a played for 54 days. As many as 76 matches will be played among a total 9 teams this season for this year’s edition of the IPL. It is time to preview two of the strongest teams in the competition, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, who would also be involved in the first match of the competition in Chennai.

Mumbai Indians, the semi finalists of the competition last year, led by Sachin Tendulkar, will be a force to be reckoned with during this edition of the IPL too. The team owned by Nita and Mukesh Ambani has not won the IPL title, even after the huge investment by the owners of their team. Will 2012 be their year?

One look at the Mumbai squad would scare any opponent away. They have some of the biggest names in world cricket. Sachin Tendulkar, Lasith Malinga, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard, A. Blizzard, Gibbs, and Mitchell Johnson are some of the MI players, and need no introduction. Apart from these players, other Indian players such as Ambati Rayudu, Dhawal Kulkarni, Munaf Patel, T. Suman, RP Singh - makes their team extra strong.

With this same bunch of players last year, they had been one of the most consistent teams. They were outdone in the semi-finals of the competition by RCB. Lasith Mailnga and Sachin Tendulkar were the most successful for their team in bowling and the batting department respectively. But MI might have one of the best batting units in the IPL - with R. Sharma, Sachin, Blizzard, Pollard, Suman, Rayudu etc. These players on a given day could tear apart any bowling line up. Pollard with his all-around ability would hold the key for MI this year.

They do not seem to have any weak link in their team but injuries, player availability, and hectic travel could lead to their downfall. If IPL was played on paper, they would have won the tournament all hands down.

In the short history of IPL, Chennai Super Kings is the most successful team with two IPL titles to their name. The team led by MS Dhoni, has been one of the most consistent teams in all the previous editions of the tournament. The team, which is owned by India Cements, still looks to be a favourite for yet another title.

2011 is history, so they need to start their campaign all together from the scratch. They, like MI, have a very strong team with a rich blend of international and Indian players. MS Dhoni has always led from the front along with his go to man Suresh Raina and Ashwin, who played an important hand last year in winning the title. Other important Indian players for CSK are M. Vijay and Badrinath. Foreign players in the SCK side are of great quality, which includes M. Hussey, Dwayne Bravo, A. Morkel, and D. Bollinger. They also have two quality spinners in the form of S. Randiv and S. Jakati. Their team seems to be a fine balance between the bat and the ball. MS Dhoni is the most important player for CSK, with his late exploits and good understanding of the game.

Owing to the rich success of the IPL, CSK might consider themselves as favourites. But one cannot rule out any IPL team winning the prestigious title.
