IRCTC may soon get into an alliance with the rapidly growing Delhi metro for opening food kiosks across 130 metro stations. Although an official deal has not yet been announced, the DMRC will provide the infrastructure to IRCTC.
GOING BY its rapid growth and mass popularity amongst the masses, the Delhi Metro will soon collaborate with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for opening 130 food joints in 130 metro stations in Delhi/NCR. As of now, food joints can be seen only in prominent and interchange metro stations such as Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, Anand Vihar, and ISBT.
Although a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has not yet been signed between the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the IRCTC officials yet, the idea is still taking shape between the two groups. With a formal agreement to be signed, the IRCTC has over 70 food plaza's across the country and is planning to set up 50 more. The recent places in Delhi where the IRCTC food plaza's can be seen includes, Udyog Bhavan, Shastri Bhavan and IIT-Delhi. When the idea of opening IRCTC cafe's in Delhi Metro popped up, people familiar with the matter said that while DMRC will facilitate space and other infrastructure support, IRCTC's responsibility will be setting up the kitchen, cooking, service and operation of the food outlets at Metro stations.
IRCTC, which is a subsidiary of the Indian railways, has been given the responsibility of catering food in the railways as per the new railway catering policy. If the idea comes into effect, the DMRC will also earn additional revenue as it is a part of the property development plan.
