The Paralympics 2010 have started. The latest news is that Irek Zaripov from Russia won the 1st Gold medal of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in biathlon. The Russian competing in the sitting category of the men's 2.4km pursuit, finished with a time of 9:51.0 to finish first, thus grabbing the gold medal. In the women's 2.5km pursuit, Ukraine were the clear winners, bagging the gold as well as the bronze medal. Olena Iurkovska won the gold medal. She finished with a time of 9:55.5, whereas Russia'a Maria Iovlena won the silver medal with a time of 10:12.6. Lyudmyla Pavlenka finished 3rd with a time of 10:20.7 and won the bronze medal. No Canadian women competed in the women's event.
In the Men's standing event later Saturday, Kirill Mikhaylov of Russia won the gold medal in 10:32.2. Nils-Erik from Norway won the silver, whereas Ukrainina Skier Grygorill Vovchynskyi won the bronze medal. Mark Arendz from Canada finished 7th with a time of 11:32.0.
