Irom Sharmila: The unsung hero
The iron lady of Manipur Irom Sharmila for the past ten years hasn't taken a morsel or a drop of water protesting against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. This act has resulted in a fatal tyranny with the official death toll of 265 this year.
IROM SHARMILA hasn't taken a morsel or a drop of water in the last ten years and yet she only starved for justice. Very few outside the state of Manipur are aware of her firm dissent and judging by the response, I would say that not many in our government are mindful of her either.

Her demand: Repeal AFSPA.

What is AFSPA?

AFSPA stands for Armed Forces Special Powers Act. By this act, the military and the police are granted the authority to use force, arrest or shoot anyone on mere suspicion. If this wasn't malefic enough, the AFSPA also protects such personnel from legal or judicial proceedings, which require the sanction of the Central government. This act has resulted in a fatal tyranny with the official death toll of 265 this year.

Annulment of this act doesn't seem like much to ask, in a country that boast of a successful form of democracy. Irom Sharmila, is after all the true representative of her people, of the innocent victims, of the families tortured and harassed.

This woman, a true satyagrahi, would not only make Gandhi proud, but also puts the so-called jingoistic leaders to shame and yet her silent call for the safety of her people falls to deaf ears.

Despite her selfless efforts, today, she is lying in a hospital bed in our capital city, detained like a petty criminal for 'attempt to suicide'.

While we light a few candles for peace, she fights with peace. While we gather to mourn the victims, she protests alone to procure them justice.
