The world might have become a global village now, but the ghost of brain drain still continue to haunt India as talented young students continue to go overseas every year for education, as well as employment opportunities.
A UNITED Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) report in 1969, had defined brain drain as, ’an abnormal form of scientific exchange between countries, characterised by a one- way flow in favour of the most highly developed countries’. Almost four decades later, the definition of brain drain has not changed a great deal with talented students still leaving the shores of developing countries in pursuit of better opportunities in the developed nations.
To think of it, India has become the outsourcing hub of the world, where all international companies are also setting shop. But this outsourcing has also meant that the talented bunch of students, who cannot find good job opportunities in India have to travel abroad in search of better job profiles. More than 25 per cent of the medical staff in America and the Britain consists of doctors, who attended medical school elsewhere. These are the same students who got trained in India, Pakistan or China and have now moved abroad for better opportunities. In the year 2008, maximum students going to the United States of America in order to study were from India. Most of these students, after finishing their education, get recruited and more often than not settle abroad. A report by the World Bank had placed India third in terms of brain drain, even ahead of China and Germany. The first two slots were taken up by Britain and Philippines. Even though the numbers represent more than a million, the percentage of Indian immigrants to foreign countries represents just five per cent of the total graduate population. When we compare this to some of the African and central American countries, it is still a low figure. Almost 47 per cent of the student population of Ghana goes abroad, whereas 89 per cent of the student population of Guyana go abroad. Well, this just can’t be called brain drain, this is brain haemorrhage.
But still brain drain continues to be a cause of concern for India, for we are getting used to thousands of students going abroad every year for education. Former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam had said that reverse brain drain will have to begin if India is to become a developed nation in the future. But the percentage of students coming back after studying overseas is not very high and hence efforts will have to be made to reduce the number of students going out in the first place. For this, we will have to revamp our education system and also include more higher education institutions in the country so that students do not have to look for alternatives elsewhere. The migration of students might have helped in ’brand India’ becoming more powerful, but the image of India needs to change in the future. We shouldn’t just be a country that produces great talent, but also the one that nurtures and builds on it. Every Indian is proud of the fact that he is an Indian, but we will have to wait for the day till he is proud of being in India.
.i think the major cause for brain drain is the political istability of that country . the talent never ends and there are no limits of one`s talent but there is aneed to encourage the talent.
.we should change our indian people mentality that there is nothing in india by carrier point of view.we should prould of our nation.just think about it........................
.we r indians so we have to do something first 4 india then 4 other countries. people go abroad 4 living luxierious life, bcoz of such type of mentality india is developing country not a developed country.......
.In India, awards and rewards are reserved for the politically supported class, educational and employment opportunities are reserved for politically favoured class, political opportunities are reserved for the politically motivated class, this situation is forcing the talent to leave the country.
Knowing this fact fully well, we deceptively drop tears for brain drain.

.it's right. but in india the educational standards are less.AND THE government DOESNOT ENCOURAGING NRI who want be here.
they are not providing research laboratories, efficient job etc..
to eliminate braindrain ,government has to increase the standards of education.
and encourage the talented person

.Basicaly not only improving the number of institutions help. But also there should be a quality of education and assurance provided by them... which would bring relief and reverse Brain Drain Process.....

.It's not just the number leaving, it's the quality of the people leaving India or China. The ones who can get onto post-graduate courses or do further research overseas are really the intellectual elite from their countries. They also tend to settle in their new host countries after their courses or initial work there. Jobs are more numerous, wages are higher, reasobnable schools for children, research facilities are more numerous, religious toleration, social mobility, etc all contribute to the attraction of living in the West. You only have to ask Indians who have settled in Flushing, NY, New Jersey and lately Melbourne and Sydney, Australia to find that out.
.I respect your sentiments, Mr. Srivastava. But we who have left India, watch India closely every day. And what do we find? A country whose politicians allow 40 million illegal Bangladeshis to swamp its fragile North Eastern states. An elite that goes ra-ra over running Formula 1 teams but not in building a world class Public Schools system. A young cadre of consumerism obsessed professionals addicted to its own narcissism. National and State Legislatures that are packed two third in capacity by conmans, murderers and gangsters. A country where extra constitutional thugs like Bal Thackerey and Laloo Prasad Yadav duke it out on the front pages of our national broadsheets. A television media that obsesses over the trivial and trivializes the objectives which should be placed on the national altar of worship. No, it is not Brain Drain. It is the moral hazard of living in India that is causing the intelligent to leave, much against our own wishes. Who does not like to live with their parents and rooted into a social structure. We gave up a lot living India. Yet for each comfort and achievement we have gained, we live a thousand regrets. Return to India then and help us ... some say. Those who have ... returned with the lure of lucre (money) in their eyes ... not for the fulfillment of some patriotic obligation or parental affection alone. You want to keep Indians at home? Make India safe for all Indians first. A country that can barely guard its political and cultural boundaries, can sing hosannas about it being a multicultural democracy all its want. That fact alone will not make it worthy of love from its own citizens. India signifies uncertainty in the mind of Indians who have left. We feel for those back "home", but do not subscribe to the notion that our departure has made the country more vulnerable. The rest of India cannot comfortably deny its own culpability in its own state of affairs.
