Is coaching hub Kota causing epidemic of student depression and suicides?
The spate of suicide by students at Rajasthan's coaching hub Kota continues unabated despite the introduction of help-line service, counseling and distressing sessions as inputs by the coaching centers and district administration.
On the last Thursday, another 17-year-old girl Kriti Tripathi committed suicide as she did not want to pursue a career in engineering which was being forced on her by her parents, police said on the basis of the suicide note left behind by her.

Depressed Kirti, who belonged to Ghaziabad, jumped off a five-storey building in Kota and was declared brought dead at a local hospital. This is the fifth suicide by a coaching student this year in Kota, which has sent another wave of shocks among students who could fall in the trap of parents' ambitions and pressure of studies caused by the cut-throat competitive learning environment created by coaching centers.

"It is a mix of bad education, private coaching, marks-economy and social competition or unrealistic expectations that are killing young students. At a place like Kota, which has become a coaching and competition hub teaming with lakhs of rival teenagers; it is more of social competitive arena where low scores are leading unacceptable low social rank at the cost of even one's life. The patchwork of counseling and help-lines is of no use," said a psycho-social expert in Jaipur.

A city that is full of coaching institutions coupled with competitive entrance examination system in which competition is taken to make-or-break point, often it leads to selfishness and lack of compassion towards self and others. Since, in a competition, only a few are winners, it results into social and emotional downsides of a majority and more so for the girls, said the female expert.

If both our education system and society are manufacturing depressed students, there is need to overhaul the system and turn into system where every child is a winner, she suggested.

So, we need to bring the education system out the current epidemic of student depression rather than indulging into patchwork on sick system, I feel.
