Is Delhi Police reliable? Main investigating cop in Nirbhaya gang-rape case accused of sexual harassment
The brutal gang-rape of 26-year-old Nirbhaya on a December night four years ago had left the whole nation shocked. The sheer brutality of the crime, the rapists inserting an iron rod into the victims' private parts had sent shivers down the spine of common people.

A lot of questions had emerged out of that incident regarding the inefficiency of Delhi Police, like how the rapists kept driving the bus with darkened glasses around South Delhi for almost 2 hours without being stopped, and later dumping the victim and her companion on the roadside almost but dead without being nabbed.

Moreover, even as Nirbhaya and her friend lay on the roadside, the two police officers arriving at the scene first, had started an argument about the jurisdiction of the crime, rather than providing medical help to the victims. One of those two officers, SHO Anil Sharma was made the main investigating officer in the Nirbhaya rape case.

"And now, in a fresh development, Station House Officer Anil Sharma, who had received an award in the Nirbhaya investigation, has himself been accused of sexual harassment.

SHO Sharma has been accused of sexually abusing a woman during a raid conducted in the Old Delhi area in the month of April last year. He has also been accused of beating up minor children and harassing the woman to withdraw her case against him.

The family of the victim has also alleged that Sharma humiliated them by calling them "pigs" and threatening to kill them all in an encounter.

According to the FIR, Sharma had said, "Suar ki auladon, main kuch bhi kar sakta hun. Sale yahi goli daag ke encounter dikha dunga ( Sons of pigs, I can do anything. I'll shoot you here and call it an encounter)."

However the accused inspector Anil Sharma has denied all charges and claimed his innocence. He said, "I have been framed in this case. Although we are fighting the legal battle in court and Honorable High Court had stayed lower court's order to file FIR against me. I know the truth will prevail; but I am appalled to see how Mohd Allaudin, a known bad character of the area is trusted and an inspector with 25 years of unscathed career isn't. These so-called victims are taking advantage of the lacunae in the law, but I will come out of it unscathed."

As per Mohd Allaudin, Inspector Anil Sharma, SHO of Chandni Mahal police station had forcibly arrested his minor children and kept them under `illegal confinement' for four day at the Turkman Gate Police Post and when his wife had gone to get their children released, Sharma had tried to "disrobe her by trying to tear her clothes and touched her private parts."

The raid had been carried out "on the orders of senior police officials" for apprehending Khalid Aminuddin aka Pehalwan, a known bad character, who is well acquainted to Allaudin and is wanted in a murder case (FIR No. 224/2015 registered under section 302/34 IPC at police station Daryaganj).

While hearing the case, Tis Hzari Court in Delhi had said, "it is apparent that police officials flouted all norms while conducting search at the house of complainant".

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Sudhanshu Kaushik in his order dated July 10, 2015 had said, "The police officials did not comply with the mandatory provisions and safeguards provided under the Code of Criminal Procedure for carrying out search. Record depicts unhealthy practice adopted by the police officials and their blatant disregard for law."

Although the matter is currently pending with the Delhi High Court, there seems to be more to this case than what meets the eye, as this is not the only complaint against SHO Anil Sharma. Complaints against him include, misuse of power, false implication, harassment and demand of extortion.

The case might be pending in the Delhi High Court against SHO Anil Sharma, but the moot question is, is Delhi still safe for women with such officers in-charge of law and order in the city?
