The MPs should realize that to maintain their own seat they have to ensure that the fire continues to burn in the kitchens of poor families. Else the poor may remain poor but the chances of many MPs to be re-elected would be cut down.
AFTER PRICE hike, Commonwealth Games corruption hike, now Members of Parliament (MP) salary will hike three fold, while people are reeling under high inflation and corruption is at all time high.
Is demand for such a huge salary hike by MPs justified? Do you think our MPs are underpaid? Last salary hike for them took place in 2006 when it went up from Rs. 4000 to Rs. 16000 a month. Now it is going to be hiked threefold with basic salary at Rs. 50,000. Added to this are constituency and office allowances, which have been doubled to Rs. 40,000 each a month. In all, a MP would get around Rs. 1.45 lakh per month including salary and allowances, once parliament approve the changes. Question is that why tax payers are forced to pay them more, when they are already drawing much more than what they are legally receiving from the government. In my opinion, if they feel that they are underpaid, why not leave politicians jobs and opt for highly paid public and private sector jobs.
If the pay hike is justified then cut off their perks atleast. They are getting so many facilities free of cost; all should be stopped immediately and they be asked to live like a common man. If they have all sympathy for the poor, they should not have demanded such a huge hike. If they deserve such a pay hike then we also deserve better governance from them which is absent. What our MPs are doing in Parliament is contrary to the thoughts of those, who fought for Independence. MPs are really meant for passing bills for welfare of people, but not self-welfare measures. The MPs are more interested in their self satisfaction. Even after getting so much money they still want a rupee above the secretary, whose basic salary is Rs. 80000 per month. And most of the MPs are stinking rich. They have the capability to buy the votes for their elevation to the Upper House. This is matter of shame rather than pride. The MPs should realize that to maintain their own seat they have to ensure that the fire continues to burn in the kitchens of poor families. Else the poor may remain poor but the chances of many MPs to be re-elected would be cut down. More than their own salary they should bother about meeting the basic needs of common man and eliminate corruption.

It is true that M.P. is a social worker who works for the Nation & should be remunerated properly but public must know the take home total emoluments not only the salary. It is a pity on the part of entire political fraternity the present salary hike has been made just after the discussion on price rise. The issue was raised and debated in parliament for the people of India but without giving any relief to general masses or increasing the salary of poor class servants the masters of masters increased their emoluments three/four times. The worst part is that none of the 750 odd M.P.s voluntarily came forward either for non increase or donating part of his/her salary in some national fund as was done by our National heroes like Jawaharlal Nehru & Dr. Rejendra Prasad in the golden era of Indian democracy. Our present M.P.s should draw some inspiration from the acts of these leaders must follow the basic fundamental traits of democratic system. Democracy is supposed to be the Government for the people & by the people with pro poor acts by the parliamentarians. Congratulations for getting a handsome hike. Please think yourself to be the servants of the nation not the rulers or Maharajas & think about the people who have sent you to Parliament.

This excellent aritcle has very succintly brought out various inter-connected issues related to and coming out of the recent decision by the Government to increase manifold the salaries and various perks of MPs. It is high time that the Government should also review various other perks and subsidies granted to the MPs. As Coomi Kapoor in Indian Express(29 August 2010) has quoted from the recent report of the Parliament??????s Food Management Committee, for 2008-2009, the Northern Railway claimed a subsidy of Rs 7.44 crore from the Finance Ministry as the cost of serving snacks and meals in Parliament. With three fold increase in the salaries of MPs and substantial increase in their perks, it is incumbent on the Ministry of Finance to withdraw the subsidy of crores of rupees, which is an unnecessary burden on the taxpayers.
I would like to tell you that please look at the brighter side of the issue. You always see the negative side, but why not the positive one. MPs are the one who have brought so many developments in the country. They have the responsibility of the whole nation on them, still they are paid so less. Also, we want educated and good people to come into politics, but do you think that someone would want to work for a mere Rs.16,000.Talking about corruption, let me tell you that they are corrupt because they do not have much salary and therefore they try to earn money by wrong means. So, I would like to say that the pay hike is justified.
I agree and respect with what you have said. Actually, the root of the problem is common man itself. The absenteeism of raising their voice in such difficult times probe these so called politicians (actually official government thieves) to act abruptly and be merciless to poor people of India. India and specially common Indian will continue to grow weaker and poorer under leadership of such paralysed and deactivated government.
Actually the post of MP was created to servr the people. It is expected that they should serve people unselfishly. Therefore the system of paying MP salary is a criminal waste leve alone the increment. Let us start a movement. Hence forth all MP will be issued a free ration card and a free travel pass in 3nd class train and definitely no pass for their spouses. As regards expenses they will visit the office of a district magistrate where they will be provided a chamber and all secretarial help. After the end of tenure they have to submit asset list and if found any increase it has to be returned to the state as they are not to become rich at electorates money.
