Is it right to defend Salman Khan through socially insensitive comments on poor victims?
After the verdict on Salman Khan's hit-and-run case that dragged in the court for 13 years, Bollywood singer Abhijit called victims dogs and actor-director-choreographer Farah Khan blamed poor footpath dwellers for the accident for which 'Salman Bhai' has been handed down five-year jail term.
Social media, mainstream media and general public have reacted to the socially insensitive tweets of Abhijit and lack of empathy for the poor by Farah Khan in her post-verdict remarks and comments.

"Both Abhijeet's tweets and Farah's comment are the examples of utterly misplaced sympathy and lack of social sensitivity toward the people who are poor and deprived. Once some people acquire material gains, they start defending their socially and legally inappropriate behaviours by blaming people who are different from them without putting themselves in their shoes," said a postgraduate student of sociology at the University of Rajasthan.

Abhijeet was heard unrepentant on the TV for his tweets. He refused to delete them and kept blaming the victims for the accident by sleeping on the pavement. He even went to the extent of warning pavement dwellers to get off or be prepared to die under the wheels of vehicles without blaming vehicle owners and drivers.

Farah too went to an extent of blaming the government for not housing pavement dwellers and allowing them being run over by vehicles through her tweet.

"We need to understand Salman has been sentenced to five years in jail for a serious crime of hit-and-run that took someone's life. When his (Salman's) kin are crying, fearing temporary social distancing due to his imprisonment, they should also realize what would have happened to the family who lost someone forever through drunken rash driving by being claimed to be from higher social strata. Moreover, only socially sensitive people are open to feelings and thoughts of others to correctly perceive and respond to them for creating a positive social environment through law-abiding behaviour and ethical moorings," said the sociology student based upon his understanding of concept of social sensitivity as a part his education.
