Is Sonia Gandhi's illness a mystery?
One wonders why Sonia Gandhi was away for five weeks. Of course, some foreign newspapers did report that she was admitted to Sloan kettering hospital for a surgery. Why was PIB quiet? Why didn't the Indian print media investigate? Vexing questions.
SONIA GANDHI is ill. She went to the States and stayed there for five weeks or so. She was admitted to the Sloan Kettering hospital in New York. Every Tom, Dick and Harry knows that people are admitted to that hospital for treatment of cancer. In the past Bollywood actress Sridevi's mother expired there because the operation was botched up. Nargis Dutt was treated there but did not survive. Everyone knew about them and the fact that Sloan Kettering had to bow to the will of God!

Are the loved ones scared that Sonia’s illness is such that a prayer will be more effective than a prescription of a doctor. God alone knows because the PIB has failed in its duty of informing the nation about the nature of illness of the National Leader because before her even the Prime Minister kowtows and abides by her instructions. Never mind if the instructions were issued in sleep. They are to be taken as the gospel truth. Meek Manmohan does not demur.

He believes in the philosophy of the Light Brigade that obeyed the wrong orders and was dissipated besides losing the battle. They are remembered even today along with Lord Tennyson’s lines “Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die; Rode into the valley of death, rode the six hundred.”

I wonder whose wise counsel it was not to disclose Sonia's illness. Pray, who made the final decision to keep the nature of illness under wraps? What for? The whole exercise was so immature that even executives of banana republic are laughed at it. Now, it is common knowledge that Sonia will be going to New York again. Not for fun but for treatment. Cancer is not treated in one sitting or one visit to hospital-that fact is known to all.

Thus this unwarranted secrecy about Sonia Gandhi's illness has damaged the reputation of Govt of India, of Sonia Gandhi and also of the Indian media. The print media survives on ads given by the govt. How can they survive by going against the instructions of ministry of I&B. The TV channels did hold chats and group discussions on Sonia’s illness, her absence from the country at a crucial time and its effect on the future of national politics. Editors who are more loyal than the king were so guarded in their opinion and just mumbled that an average viewer could hardly make out what they said. Was it an eulogy or an elegy, and for whom- for an Indian or a foreigner living in Bharat, it was hard to tell.

An online news portal carried an article by the new correspondent  of a leading newswire service in India on September 28 2011 and the writer was brutally frank to analyse and conclude that Sonia's illness has left the Gandhi family at crossroads. The said correspondent also said that Rahul Gandhi does not have Leadership qualities to make the Prime Minister of India. Of course, when the war of words between Pranab Mukherjee and Chidambaram was hotting up, the Prince preferred to spend a few days in the cool climes of Srinagar, Kashmir. I wonder if the psycho-analyst will term it as escapism.

In my opinion the nation has a right to know about its leader's state of health, especially when tax payers are footing the heavy bills presented by the world famous cancer hospital. Believers in the Vedic philosophy of incarnation of soul that we are, there is nothing to be scared of, be it cancer or Alzheimer. Let us wish the ailing leader early recovery and restoration to perfect health. Believers in the theory of life, death and rebirth or life beyond death have nothing to fear. Don’t worry and be happy-that is our motto and we live by it.
