Money has taken priority over the sport. International Cricket Council (ICC) has also inadvertently contributed to the oxidisation of Test cricket's dominance.
TEAM INDIA, the number one cricket Test team has suffered a massive set back. The team started their series in England by losing very first test match at Lord's by 196 runs. Now England leads the series by 1-0 and Team India would remain under pressure for the next Test, which is going to start from July 29 2011 at Nottingham.
The Indian team was not short of talent, and all of them seemed to be in form. Since the very first day, the team has been trying to cope up with the absence of one of its ace players Virender Sehwag, who has been ruled out for the first two test matches due to injury.
After IPL, some senior players opted out from the West Indies tour due to fatigue. With players retiring out of the team due to various injuries and fatigue related reasons, just one question looms at large; has the T20 format demolished Test cricket and one day international games?
“I think it is 20-20 over game is killing the real beauty of 50-50 over game and Tests,” said one young cricket fan.
“People enjoy 20-20 over cricket more than 50-50 over game. 20-20 over game ends in two hours. Who has the time to sit for whole one day and five days for 50-50 and test matches respectively?” added another fan.
Money has taken priority over the sport.
International Cricket Council (ICC) has also inadvertently contributed to oxidisation of Test cricket’s dominance. Any player can set their performance by playing five-day game rather than T20 or premier league. T20 game is not reflecting a players ability to achieve.
T20 game is fine as it is providing entertainment to spectators, but this shortest format is no substitute for either one day international (ODI) or even the tests. In tests and ODI, players’ abilities come under far closer scrutiny than the T20 game. Other reason is media hype, which is also demolishing image of test matches.
BCCI should ensure that the dates do not clash with any international fixtures and players should be allowed to relax for at least a month to focus on the next tournament. Cash-rich tournament remains the main reason for players and BCCI to divert attention of test cricket.
