THIS IS a not the script of any Bollywood film but it could very well be the script of a future Bollywood film. This is the story of innocent Vedpal who loved Sonia and  married her. Vedpal, 26, of Mataur village in Kaithal district, used to run a medical store in Singhwal village. He married Sonia, who belonged to the same gotra on March 10) in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Sonia's family did not approve of the marriage. Incensed by their defiance, the 'Bhanwala Khap' had called for execution of the newly-weds but later, after a joint panchayat of Mataur and Singhwal villages, Vedpal had agreed to send Sonia to her house. Sonia's family refused to send her back and didn't allow them to meet. Vedpal moved the High Court, which appointed a warrant officer and directed police to escort Vedpal has he went over to her family's house to get her back. However, when Vedpal reached Sonia's parental house at about 2200hrs on July 22, her family members and villagers attacked the team of police.

While Vedpal was beaten to death, warrant officer Surajbhan's leg was broken and the police station in-charge Balwant Sharma, ASI Omprakash and other two policemen had to flee to save their lives. A man was killed for the crime of loving a girl and marrying her. He had not cheated anyone. He just wanted to live a family life with his wife but the gram panchayat played the role of Talibani chieftans and decided to award him with death. It is a matter that is shameful both for our society and for our government that India calls itself the world's largest democracy and yet incidents like these happen before the police.

Our panchayat always talks about culture and customs but what they are forgetting is love they and also our history - Arjun had married with his cousin and Prithivi Raj Chouhan married his cousin's daughter. In our history and culture, there are so many examples of these types of alliances, so why have we forgotten these lessons so easily. To love is to believe in faith and marriage is between two persons and it is not between gotra and caste.
