THE KILLING of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and one of his sons in a US-led operation was confirmed by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) on Monday.
ISI chief Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha told media persons that Osama was killed by a special US team in Abbottabad, about 113 kilometres from Pakistan's capital Islamabad. Osama was killed along with his three bodyguards and one of his sons also perished in the attack though his name has not been revealed yet. Pasha also said that six other sons of the fugitive along with three sons and four aides were arrested in the operation, which started after midnight and continued for quite some time. He also informed that the actual operation was carried out by US Special Forces and the Pakistani forces provided back-up support.
Local residents said that that sound of firing was heard after mid-night but people were not aware that such an important operation was going on. A helicopter, which was participating in the operation also caught fire after it suffered a mechanical failure, locals added, after they saw a fireball in the air. The killing of Osama was confirmed by the White House, which went on to say that this was a major victory in the war against terror.
