Israel's barbarian act evoked worldwide adverse reactions against it. However, USA, UK, Canada. Australia and the European Union criticised Hamas for its rocket attacks on Israel. Meanwhile, on July 23, 2014, Geneva based 47 member States of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) adopted resolution number S-21 against Israel for military offensives and human rights violations in Gaza.
While USA was the only country which vehemently opposed the resolution against Israel, India voted against Israel and in favour of resolution which condemned the Israel for its inter alia widespread, systematic and gross violations of international rights and fundamental freedom in Gaza.
Parenthetically, UNHRC was formed on March16, 2006. The UNHRC has passed 50 resolutions against Israel condemning it for human rights violations till 2014, which is almost half of the total regulations passed by the UNHRC including on other related subjects against different counties.
Nevertheless, UNHRC is not free from controversies. Whenever issues on Israel were considered and deliberated by the UNHCR, it has repeatedly been accused by the USA, for UNHRC being biased against Israel and taking anti-Israeli stance(s).
Functioning of UNHCR has also been criticized by some human rights activists for ignoring human rights violations in Middle East, China, Syria and Cuba. Meanwhile, UNHCR created a controversy in March 2012 when it had facilitated a Hamas parliamentarian at its Geneva Headquarters.
Since its inception on May14, 1948 Israel has found an dependable and all weather tested friend and an ally in the USA. Israel, who is the sole source of Jewish-Arab imbroglio before and after its birth enjoys the US mandate. Notably, USA was the first country to recognize Israel within a few hour of its coming into being.
The historians attribute this swift diplomatic move by the USA due to certain reasons including USA wanted to have an edge over the erstwhile Soviet Union in becoming the first country to recognize Israel; the then American President Truman was looking forward his re-election in the next Presidential election and wanted to win over Jews in the USA in his favour and most important, it was Zionist pressure that influenced the USA to recognize the Israel immediately.
Incidentally out of 192 member countries of the United Nations, 160 countries recognized Israel and out of 57 Muslim countries, only 10 recognised.
USA is strongest military ally of Israel. Israel is
one of the largest US military aid recipients in the world. From 1987
to 2000, Israel used to receive about $1.9 billion annually, which in
the year 2001 was increased to $2.4 billion annually. In the year
2007, USA signed a ten year military pact with Israel, under which
USA has been providing around $ 3 billion annually to the Israel as a
The extent of formidable military relations between the USA and Israel can be gauged from the fact that even in between military skirmishes, when Israel was pounding rocket attacks on Gaza, on August 4, 2014 President Obama approved additional aid of $ 225 million to Israel to improve a short range missile system viz; 'Iron Dome' to intercept rockets and artillery shells from a range of four to seventy kilometers. In addition, Israel is also involved with the USA in joint military activities including research in armaments and military exercises.
USA and Israel also maintain sturdy economic relations. Israel was biggest US financial aid beneficiary from mid 70s to mid 2000. However, since year 2007 USA has stopped providing economic aid to the Israel due to latter's strong and growing economy. In the year 2013, while US goods exports to Israel were to the tune of US$ 13, 747 million, its imports from Israel were worth US$ 22, 808 million, thus balance of trade was in favour of Israel. Israel also enjoys Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the USA, which was signed in April 1985. This was America's first bilateral free trade agreement with any country in the world.
Over the decades numerous US leaders, including US Presidents, have reiterated importance of USA's strong relations with Israel and asserted that Israel's enemies are America's enemies. They often also expressed the impression of USA's having "special relations" with Israel and asserted that the US support is vital for the security of Israel.
Israel too hold importance for the USA. This included, Israel's continued support to USA in UN and other international organization on international and multinational issues; Israel being a strong ally of USA in the Middle East; Israel's excellent expertise in intelligence collecting capabilities on terrorism and providing useful information to the USA.
And last but not the least Israel being a dependable friend of the USA in militarily use of Israel's Haifa Port by the USA for its Sixth Fleet.
