ISRO launches spy satellite RISAT
RISAT can take images of the earth in all weather. It would also map and manage natural disasters like floods and landslides and would amplify defence surveillance capabilities of the nation. Besides, it would also help in tracking ships at sea.

IN A bid to bolster the country’s defence capabilities, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched its first all-weather spy satellite on Monday (April 20).

The satellite would help security agencies keep a vigil on the movements at the borders. PSLV-C12, which is carrying a 300-kg Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-2) and 40-kg micro educational satellite ANUSAT, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota at 6:45 am today and placed into 550 km orbit around earth.

The PSLV weighs 230 tonnes and it is 44 metres tall. The four-stage PSLV-C12 blasted off from the second launch pad with the ignition of the core first stage.

The RISAT can take images of the earth in all weather. It would also map and manage natural disasters like floods and landslides and would amplify defence surveillance capabilities of the nation. Besides, it would also help in tracking ships at sea. RISAT features a unique system Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and many antennas to receive signals. The SAR has been manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries and it provides defence capabilities to the RISAT.

The Anna University of Tamil Nadu is the first Indian university to build the satellite ANUSAT. It would demonstrate unique technologies related to message storing and forward operations.

ANUSAT is a store-and-forward communication satellite and would transfer the confidential academic materials like question papers to prevent paper leakages. It would also supervise drought and wasteland management, urban planning and other studies.

ISRO has launched 30 satellites into orbits since 1993. While 14 of them were from India, 16 were from foreign countries.
