IN AN attempt to settle a tax dispute, R.P. Meena, Commissioner, Income Tax (Appeals) was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday in Mumbai. However, the case was highlighted only after when the necessary judicial actions were conducted.
Speaking to the media, CBI Joint Director Rishi Raj Singh told mediapersons that this is an unfortunate case. Bribe was being demanded by one of the highest ranking officer in the country.
Meena, a cadre from the 1987 batch of the Indian Revenue Service had previously served as Additional Commissioner, Investigations and Company Assessment.
As per the case reports, Meena had allegedly asked for a bribe from the complainant whose identity has been kept under wraps. In order to clear the complainant’s file, Meena asked the man to pay a bribe of Rs 2.20 lakhs to Pai. A meeting was arranged between pai and the complainant in a restaurant at the Chhatarpati Shivaji Terminus following, which accused were nabbed by the CBI.
The modus operandi of the CBI was that, it had recorded the conversation taking place between the two accused and the complainant.
