It is his personal choice, says former Davis Cup Coach after Somdev Devvarman's 'no' to Asian Games
The All India Tennis Association(AITA) might be unhappy with Somdev Devvarman's decision to focus on the ATP tour at the expense of the Asian Games, but former Davis Cup coach, Enrico Piperno feels it is fair for the Indian player to focus on his ATP rankings.

He said, '' It is his personal choice. He is not letting his country down. In the past he has represented India in the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games etc as well.'' During the last Asian Games in China, Somdev put up an impressive performance winning two gold medals for India. As it seems, Somdev would not be representing India to defend his title during the upcoming Asian Games.

The AITA has been utterly disappointed with Somdev, as the Indian player said he was not asked about his availability before announcing the Asian Games squad. The AITA must have taken the player for granted, which might cost India a medal as well. The AITA are helpless, for the players earn their living playing in the ATP circuit, primarily.

Somdev has chosen to play in the ATP circuit rather than represeneting India and Enrico Piperno sees some logic in his decision. He explains, ''His ATP ranking has dipped tremendously, to 148 in the ATP circuit. He has to think about his career. If in the next few months or so, if his ranking dips to 200 or so, he would not be able to compete in single competitions as well.''

With Tennis being an individual sport, there has been instances, when players have decided to sit down for the Davis Cup ties as well, which includes top international stars such as Djokovic, Federer etc. On such instances, there were no hue and cry in those nations. The AITA also needs to undertsand that the players do not play under the national federation, so they should not create any pressure and ask Somdev to play for India. The AITA has a say only over Davis Cup competitions.

The former Davis Cup coach said, ''We should not make the issue a big one, as the boy (Somdev) has been struggling and he also needs to make (re-build) his career.''

The AITA has decided to replace Somdev with Divij Sharan for the Asian Games.
