It is time to put a stop to child labour and trafficking
For these orphan and homeless children, rescue is not the only way out as there is urgent need to create a holistic rehabilitation and integration program. Charity and advocacy starts from homes and neighborhood.
ONCE I saw a cartoon of R.K. Laxman, which was showing a road construction site and many people were seen to be working in the picture. In the centre, the cartoon was showing a lady with the help of one hand carrying a loaded basket on her head and in her other side a baby was sitting in her lap - she too was holding a basket on her little head.

The cartoon had a caption saying, “Learn to balance it properly, silly girl! Remember, soon you will have to start working.”

This is not simply a cartoon saying something funny. It is telling a pathetic story of harsh living at a tender age, of child labor, and of our society.

Education, social values, moral ethics, spirituality, religious beliefs, cultural values are nowhere to be seen because society is insensitive and heartless to the plight of child labour. In case of girls, child labour is the worst situation due to very harsh working conditions.

In the name of getting jobs, poor teenaged girls are simply being trafficked by employment agencies from tribal, rural and other backwards belts to urban areas as well as being pushed abroad to gulf countries both for domestic work as well as prostitution in the garb of work. In both cases within the country and outside, these children are raped, murdered, sexually harassed and monetarily exploited.

The government should invite proposals for income generating projects to support these children along with rescue and rehabilitation.

The income orientation programs of light-natured work including greeting cards/gifts, etc., should be encouraged. Moreover, these projects should have full transparency and accountability with pretty good monitoring system. All types of placement agencies should have same transparency and accountability. Without positive, preventive, and creative educational system all efforts are fruitless.
