The Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi is under attack for his consorting with younger girls, particularly by his wife of two decades, Veronica Larrio. She, in a statement recently said that she could not stay with a man who frequented minors
THE WHOLE world knows that the Italians have inherited sexual prowess from their great ancestors, the Romans. Both men and women are proud of their descent as far as expertise in love making is concerned. The similarity between the ancient Romans and the modern Italians ends there.
A look at the modern day Italy will tell us that amorous activities have not declined due to economic recession. The legend of Romeo and Juliet is as green as ever. Besides the Italians, men and women from all over the world flock to the make believe world of Verona and places associated with the fiction created by Shakespeare. Now every romantic boy wishes to step into the shoes of Romeo and girls into sandals of Juliet. The Italians are keeping these fables alive as they give a tremendous boost to tourism and economy. Of course, it has a side effect too. Romance spills into real life of young and old alike.
Silvio Berlusconi is 72 years old. He is the Prime Minister of Italy and a media baron. He has been married twice and both the wives begot him children who love their papa. Berlusconi’s political opponents have mounted charges against him again and again but the septuagenarian has survived unscathed.
However, his second wife of two decades, Veronica Lario, recently went on record to say that she cannot stay with a man who frequented minors. The Prime Minister denies the charge levelled by his wife and says “it is just ridiculous.”
When he was confronted with the evidence of his having spent quite a few weekends with an aspiring model, Noemi Letizia, 18, in his villa away from his wife, Berlusconi denied that there was any impropriety in this. A local photographer had taken some pictures of men and women attending his party earlier and Berlusconi moved a court of law against intrusion of privacy, succeeding in getting the publication banned. The estranged wife also charges him with the offence of presenting that young teenage model a gold necklace and that is just not done. Veronica’s parting shot was, “I cannot live with a man who consorts with minors in sleepover parties in the privacy of his villa in Sardinia.” The social observers are of the opinion that their marriage is not only on the rocks but almost over.
It comes as a surprise to his opponents that his children from both the marriages love him. The eldest daughter says that whenever she needed her father, he was there. Other children affirm that they have received the love and affection of their father and lived a family life learning traditional values. In view of these statements of children, it may be difficult for Veronica to label her husband as an uncaring parent who did not lend a helping hand in bringing up the children and giving them a family atmosphere.
Letizia later seems to have told publications that she spent a weekend at the villa when she was 17. Though many in Berlusconi's faction believe that the reports are just rumours. There are also rumours that his friends have privately advised him to go for a clinical treatment to get rid of this addiction of younger girls.
