Its Bestu Varas day today, Prime Minister Modi greets Gujaratis with 'Saal Mubarak'
PM greets Gujaratis across the world on the beginning of New Year.

Today, it is the first day of Gujarati New Year, Bestu Varas, being marked with great pomp and show, fairs and religious rituals related to Govardhan puja.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Gujaratis across the world in his released message that stated, "Saal Mubarak to all Gujaratis across the world. May the coming year bring happiness, prosperity and lead to fulfilment of your aspirations."

For Gujarati Bestu Varas is the time to bid farewell to the past year's difficulties and make a fresh start. They clean their houses and decorated them with rangoli, flowers and lighted diyas. People wear new clothes on this day and enjoy themselves with visits to fairs, prayers in temples, feasts and festivities.

Also, people make a small hillock of mud and cow dung replicating Govardhan Parvat and worship it. Further, Anna-Koot is offered to the Lord Krishna consisting of fifty-six or one hundred and eight dishes.  Often, homemade sweets and desserts are prepared and distributed among the neighbours and relatives.

Further, the day also marks the beginning of the financial year for the businessmen to open new accounts books and ledgers on this auspicious day.
