On the eve of Guru Purnima in Jaipur, the followers of Hindu and Jain saints; music and dance institutions; Vidya Bharati Schools, temples and other institutions have announced the celebration of the festival marked by singing of devotional songs, honouring teachers, holding discourses and organising sacred thread ceremony events for devout.
As usual, Guru Purnima in Jaipur is going to be a day of hustle and bustle in various temples, auditoriums, community halls and institutional premises to listen to the discourses and pay tribute to Rishi Veda Vyasa and their venerated gurus, masters and teachers. For the last three days the discourses on Guru Mahima are already being held.
The day is observed as the birth anniversary of Maharishi Veda Vyasa as the universal guru who compiled four Vedas as well as wrote Upanishads and puranas to explain and clarify the principles mentioned in the Vedas. He also wrote the epic Mahabharata and upa-puranas revered by the Hindus.
A Guru is regarded as a spiritual master in Hindu and Jain traditions. In respect of the spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura says, "If we take shelter of the lotus feet of the spiritual master, we can become free from illusion, fear and distress. If we wholeheartedly beg for his mercy without any deceit then the spiritual master bestows all auspiciousness upon us."
"By the grace of the spiritual master, the cloud of the mercy of the Personality of Godhead is brought in, and then only, when the rains of Krishna consciousness fall, can the fire of material existence be extinguished," says Srila Prabhupada of Hare Krishna Movement in Srimad Bhagavatam
