Jaipur celebrates International Museum Day
Jaipur is celebrating International Museum Day (IMD) today with a day-long workshop and an exhibition on the topic 'Importance of Museums in the Present Context' at the Centre for Musueology and Conservation at the University of Rajasthan.
The workshop will be opened and addressed by Dr. Chandermani Singh, who has been associated with Jawahar Kala Kendra for a long time. Some special events will also be organized by various museums in Jaipur for the tourists, students and visitors to mark the day.

Jaipur is famous for its museums such as the Albert Hall Museum at Ram Niwas Garden, Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum or City Palace Museum, Museum of Indology, Natural History Museum and Science Museum. All these museums will be hosting events to mark the day. However, the Albert Hall Museum will be a centre of attraction being the oldest museum that functions as the State museum of Rajasthan.

Established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), IMD highlights a specific theme that changes every year and this year's theme is "Museums for a sustainable society". The theme is meant for highlighting the role of museums in raising public awareness about the need for a society that is less wasteful, more cooperative and that uses resources in a way that respects living systems.

ICOM President, Hans-Martin Hinz, in a statement on IMD said, "Museums, as educators and cultural mediators, are adopting an increasingly vital role in contributing to the definition and implementation of sustainable development and practices. Museums must be able to guarantee their role in safeguarding cultural heritage, given the increasing precariousness of ecosystems, situations of political instability, and the associated natural and man?made challenges that may arise. Museum work, through education and exhibitions for example, should strive to create a sustainable society. We must do everything we can to ensure that museums are part of the cultural driving force for the sustainable development of the world."

The first IMD was observed in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. According to ICOM, last year more than 35,000 museums hosted events in 145 countries on IMD.
