Jaipur celebrates National Doctors' Week
In Jaipur, National Doctors' Week is being observed and local newspapers are publishing case illustrations of city's noted doctors and their health advices and tips. The week-long observance will terminate on July 1 with special events in the booming health sector in the city.

National Doctors' Day (NDD) will be celebrated on July 1 to honour the noted physician Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal across India. On the occasion of NDD, public, hospitals, health organizations organize special events to felicitate the medical fraternity across the country.

The birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna, Dr. Roy (1882-1962) marks the celebration of NDD in India to create awareness about the significance of doctors and physicians in our lives how important they are to us in treating us and restoring our health.

Due to privatization of health sector and enhanced greed, a lack of commitment and zeal to serve humanity, the instances of public violence and protests against doctors have increased. Hitting at falling medical professional standards and its becoming a business based on competition Donald Berwick had once remarked, "Competition makes things come out right. Well, what does that mean in health care? More hospitals so they compete with each other. More doctors compete with each other. More pharmaceutical companies. We set up war. Wait a minute, let's talk about the patient. The patient doesn't need a war."

The spirit of service is diminishing among doctors and they are becoming more and more money-minded and doctors are falling prey to commissions from the medical labs and pharmaceutical firms, many feel. In this regard, Thomas Frank has aptly remarked, "Money has transformed every watchdog, every independent authority. Medical doctors are increasingly gulled by the lobbying of pharmaceutical salesmen."

Doctors need to be reminded of the Hippocratic Oath on NDD despite the fact there is no direct punishment for breaking it in modern days. However, for malpractice and wrong treatment, a wide range of punishments from legal action to civil penalties from consumer courts and other courts exist for civil and criminal charges.

Anyway, Happy Doctors' Week!
