Jaipur celebrates Sindhi Asu Chand festival
The main Asu Chand festival was organised at Sindhi Colony, Rajapark on October 17. At the Jhulelal temple here, flag hoisting was carried out in the morning, collective eating (langar) at temple was held and prayers were sung in the evening culminating into an arti. Also, a special prayer was organised for the world peace on the occasion of Asu Chand festival.
JHULELAL TEMPLES at Mansarovar, Banipark, Durgapura and Agrawal Farm were decorated for the festivities and rituals. In the evening, cultural programmes were organised by various Sindhi community organizations in the city.
As we know, Sindh, an erstwhile province of United
India and now a part of Pakistan, is known as a land of pious men. However, after the partition, Sindhi Hindus who migrated to India recreated a Sindhi God - Jhulelal and followed Hindu philosophy based on the concept of material
world as 'Bhavsagar' or ‘ocean of strife’ for salvation under the guidance of Water God, Varun.
Prayers of Lord Varun in Rig Veda is central to Sindhi Hinduism which is translated in English by Alka: "Oh father of the Universe, Varun Devta! You have bestowed on me a beautiful body of five elements. You have given it power to enjoy worldly pleasures. I praise You for this benevolence. Oh Charitable Deity, give me that power of understanding that I do not consider this vessel of dust only a fountain of joy. Beautifying body, looking after it all life, I should not do that. Oh embodiment of bliss, kindle your immortal light in my dusty body, I will find true path to happiness by that light."
Sindhis in Jaipur celebrated their two festivals called Asu Chand and Cheti Chand. The latter marks the beginning of Sindhi New Year.
