Jaipur celebrates two-day Teej festival
The girls and women of Jaipur are upbeat with two day Hariyali Teej (July 26-27) festival being celebrated with their participation with lehriya dresses, makeup, new bangles, henna, bindi, mandanas, songs, dancing, swinging, processions, prayers and worship rituals.

Teej festival is traditionally observed by women to celebrate the Feminine Divine and for welcoming the monsoons, on the third day of the current Indian month of Shravan. Women pray to goddess Parvati seeking the wellness of their husband, children and their own self. Both, the fertility and nurturance elements of women and nature are celebrated.

The first day of the festival is called Sinjara for women to do makeup, don ornaments and wear colourful dresses and enjoy themselves. Fairs are being held in many parts of the city for selling clothes, pictures of Teej Mata, earthen pots, wares, clothes, ghevar sweet, makeup articles, bangles, bindis, decoration articles, etc. Also, for the two days of the festivities, the processions of Teej Mata are being taken out.

It is the ghevar sweet shops, bangle sellers and henna artists who are doing brisk business. At the local parks, shopping malls and community centres swings have been put up for women to enjoy the Teej festival.

In Rajasthan, the monsoon festivals of Teej is primarily dedicated to Goddess Parvati and her union with Lord Shiva. Hence, it is the festival of married women who are celebrating it with gusto. However, girls of all ages enjoy the festivities.

This evening, an elaborate Gangaur procession was taken out in Jaipur to be is watched by people in large numbers. The Teej idol of Gangaur will be covered with a canopy with participation of a large number of women in colourful lehariya dresses. On this day, a special sweets sattu and ghevar are consumed at night to end the festivities.
