Jaipur to celebrate Scientific Temper Day on August 20 with a seminar
The Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS) held a planning meeting to mark the Scientific Temper Day on August 20 in Jaipur with a seminar by inviting science experts, various organizations, teachers, teacher associations, trade unions, student unions, farmer unions, women groups, NGOs, societal organisations and scientists.

The meeting decided to draft a memorandum and recommendations for centrality of scientific temple in institutions, educational set-up and in public life. The main purpose is to spread rational thought and responsible behaviour to be handed over to the Governor of Rajasthan.

The day will mark the death anniversary of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar was murdered on this date in 2013, who was fighting against superstitions and promotion of scientific temper. Over the last few years, there has been decline in scientific temper due to unfounded utterances by some public figures and opinion shapers, it is believed.

Narendra Dabholkar- a medical doctor, rationalist, author and president of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS) is credited for promulgation of the Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Ordinance. And, it was in 2014, he was posthumously awarded the Padma Shri for social work and spread of scientific temper among the masses.

In Jaipur meeting, it was seen that there was a heightened feeling of concern among the well-meaning professionals and educators that people in position of power are increasingly making comments on science without any evidence and distorting the history of science and its development.

it needs to known and imbibed that the scientific temper is regarded as an attitude of logical and rational thinking by employs a scientific method of finding things, experimenting and verification.

Jahagirdar, scientific temper is the frame of mind which has a thirst for knowledge, which recognises that knowledge can be acquired by observation, experience and experiment, if necessary.
