Jaipur to host 2-day international puppet festival
A two-day international puppet festival 'Ishara' is going to be organized on March 3 and 4 in Jaipur at the auditorium of Step by Step International School. The purpose of the festival is to revive the tradition of puppetry both for education and entertainment.

According to the organizers of the event, Teamwork Productions, the highpoint of the festival will be the puppets from Ireland and Spain along with puppeteers from India. Rajasthan too has a rich culture of puppetry and will form a vital part of the festival.

Puppetry can play an important role in making elementary education effective and joyful. Puppets can not only be used to teach normal children, they can also assist children with special educational needs through interesting ways of communication and interaction. Experts believe that puppets can do much more than mere teaching; they empower children and adults both to talk about really important and sometimes difficult academic and societal issues.

Thus, puppets can be used as entertainers, therapists and educators. Puppetry as folk performing art is an important aspect of our history and everyday social life, therefore, it need to be used for educational purposes in a big way, I think.

My own experience in use of puppets for classroom instruction informs that a teacher can easily make finger puppets, hand glove puppets and stick puppets to teach specific portions of different subjects.
