Jaipur's medical fraternity celebrates World Anesthesia Day
Jaipur hospitals and medical fraternity and medical students celebrated the World Anesthesia Day on October 16 that commemorates the first successful demonstration of ether anesthesia on October 16 in the year 1846 at the Massachusetts General Hospital, home of the Harvard School of Medicine.

On the occasion of the observance, the local Eternal Hospital in its message said, "We salute the anesthesia fraternity on the occasion of 172th World Anesthesia Day. Anesthesia is a balancing act - a tight rope walk where every step matters."

Terming Anesthesia as one of the greatest discoveries of modern medicine, the message added that the anasthetists skillfully cared for the body and breath of life since it made it possible for patients to obtain the benefits of surgical treatment without the pain associated with an operation. An anaesthetist keeps the patient in a carefully controlled state of unconsciousness that stops the patient from being aware, feeling pain and forming memories.

The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesioloigsts (WFSA) representing anaesthesiologists from over 150 countries coordinates the observance globally. This year, WFSA has launched "The Right Stuff" campaign to highlight the importance of the appropriate equipment in providing life-saving anaesthesia care.

Furthermore, World Health Organisation (WHO) and  WFSA have jointly published the WHO-WFSA International Standards for a Safe Practice of Anesthesia for the first time which highlights the importance of adequate facilities and equipment such as the pulse oximeter and continuous waveform capnography for safe anaesthesia care.
