Japanese salon uses live snails for facial treatment
Snails, commonly known as agricultural and garden pest, are one of the edible delicacies in French cuisine. But now they are going to play a new role in the new revolutionary facial treatment, as it is believed that the mucus of the snail contains powerful properties which are good for skin.

Having live snails crawling on your face sounds like the stuff of nightmares, but a company in Japan is hoping people will be prepared to pay for it. This new treatment involves slime discharge from live snails, as the mucus contains proteins, antioxidants and hyularonic acid, which are useful to retain moisture in the skin, soothe inflammation, and help in removing the dead skin from the face and giving an anti-aging effect.

A Tokyo-based beauty salon Ci:z.Labo has come up with this revolutionary method of snail treatment. Manami Takamurs, the salon spokeswomen says, “Snails have three main properties: they get rid of dead skin, heal snow winds and cool sun burns. In this way, you can have 100 per cent pure snail essence directly on the skin,” reported AFP.

As part of the salon's 'Celebrity Escargot Course', customers will get five minutes of snail therapy along with massage and other facial treatments. Ms. Takamurs also said that this new revolutionary facial treatment is in huge demand, and many people are eager to try it. But the salon is only able to provide one facial per day, so there is a long waiting list for this facial treatment by the people.

Sayaka Ito, a model who has experienced the treatment says, “You can feel the snails moving on your face, first it’s surprising but actually it is rather nice, but relaxing as well, you will almost feel sleepy.” She also said that her skin was really smooth and moist after the facial treatment.

There is also a historical importance of snail slime: early doctor Hippocrates used to crush snails and mix them with sour milk, for the treatment of skin inflammation. There are also some beauty products infused with mollusc slime, which are popular in Japan and South Korea.
