AFTER BEING formally announced as the Prime Minister of Japan, Yukio Hatoyama has declared his newly inducted cabinet to the country and the media. Kan, has been made the Deputy Prime minister, Katsuya Okada has become the Foreign minister and Hirohisa Fuji is the new Finance minister.
Kan, 62 is a former DPJ leader, who is ready to serve as the Deputy Prime minister and as the head of the new National Strategy Bureau. He was never a member of the LDP, unlike many of his fellow cabinet persons. Before joining the Parliament in 1980, he associated himself with social Democratic Federation.
He also served as the Health Minister under the LDP and gained popularity after a scandal involving HIV tainted blood products was exposed.
Hirohisa Fuji, 77, is stepping in the Parliament with his hand on the finance pulse of the country. He has spent 20 years in the field and has also served the position earlier, in 1990s.
Fuji started his political career as a lawmaker in LDP but in 1993, he criticised the government, stating that it should not intervene in the currency market to curb the strength of the yen as long as the market moves are moderate. There are high aspirations from Fuji as he gets ready to govern the economy of the country.
Katsuya Okada, 56, is a former bureaucrat. He rose as a leader of Democratic Party of Japan in 2004. He has stated that Japan will continue to prioritise the security alliance with Washington. He also weaved his speech with words of building relationships with Asian neighbours and to overcome historical differences.
