Jaspal Bhatti: A hit man of Flop Show
Jaspal Bhatti, actor, comedian, director and producer, was synonymous with infusing a fresh brand of humour in comedy of the late '80s and '90s. For me he is the person who brought humour from films to the small screen.

I WAS about 7 to 8 years old when his super hit shows Ulta-Pulta and Flop Show were released and we used to sit together watching these shows on DD1. Last Thursday, after hearing the news of his tragic demise, brought all those memories fresh in my mind, and my heart ached with pain thinking we will not be having that unique reason to laugh - the dry wit of Jaspal Singh Bhatti.

I still remember his shows and many humorous episodes, portraying different themes and addressing different social and political issues in every episode. Ulta-Pulta, a short and witty satire, which conveyed a message in very short and humourous sketches, was so good that it was addictive - just could not miss it.

I am reminded of one such episode in which one professor brings his new scooter to the mechanic (Jaspal Bhatti), just to clean its spark plug but in the most simple manner Bhatti conveys that how today's mechanics make a fool of customers and open every spare part of the vehicle, and bill Rs. 135, that too without repairing the scooter!

In one of the episodes of Flop Show, on the importance of meetings in offices and the greatness of Government employees, is still etched in many people's minds. In one of the dialogues, he says, "Govt. employee is one who takes government precious time as his own that means he must utilize that time in doing his personal household work."

He also tells his subordinate that real calibre of boss can only be judged by his capability to hold more number of meetings in a single day. Real humour was seen when in place of finalising the agenda of a meeting they all discuss who will sit where and from where they will get 'Samose and Gulab Jamun'. "Agenda to kal bhi dekh lenge magar samose kachche nahi hone chahiye," he says to his secretary in the episode.

"Sir what is the result of a meeting?" asks one character, and Bhatti replies, "We all unanimously took one very important decision". We curiously wait for a reply, then with a simple and straight face, he says, "Date for the next meeting."

As a child I remember laughing uncontrollably at these dialogues. In another episode he intelligently portrayed the character of a government employee who is always presenting fake medical bills to his boss and takes extra money. And in the end in order to help an old ill friend he himself gets trapped in his own racket of fake bills. I still remember the name of the hospital of that episode "Hit & Trial Hospital New Delhi"!

Jaspal Bhatti once presented one episode where PhD students of Professor Bhatti serve their guide more than working on their research to get their degrees, and please their guide. He, as a professor and guide to students, gives odd personal jobs to his students, which beautifully portrays the current education system of the country.

Somebody gets milk for him in the morning at 5 am, some are given jobs to sell his second-hand old car, and 5 to 6 PhD students are given the duty to start the same car every morning.

There were among the many humorous eye openers Jaspal Bhatti presented - with messages rolled into humour - like how to eat at a biscuit with tea and how to wear a payjama, and many such comic tutorials. To again enjoy these comic sketches and numerous others, one can go to YouTube and search for past episodes.

I am reminded of all these memories and they flashed through my mind, so I went to YouTube and watched all the episodes that I could search, and felt heavy in my heart for my and my father's favourite comic actor. I wish he will still make God laugh up there with his witty comedy.
