Jaswant Singh's Lok Morcha plan: A comeback?

THE JINNAH controversy may have cost Jaswant Singh his good affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but the veteran politician has already taken on a brand new, independent political group named Lok Morcha. A report in a leading newspaper declared the formation of the group and Jaswant Singh, in response, stated that the Lok Morcha is merely an attempt at forging a forum so that the independent MPs get a fair chance to raise their points in Parliament.

He went on to say that the time allocated for the independent MPs in Parliament is relatively less, hence a forum such as this would foster growth and better functioning of the parliamentary sessions.

“Throwing a veteran politician out of a political unit/ party without giving him a chance to justify himself even once, does not reflect too well upon the party itself. Singh is an ex-army man and keeping that in mind, the firing-over-a-telephone reflected nothing but disrespectful attitude,” opined Dr Asghar Ali Engineer. Former minister Jaswant Singh may have been on front pages for the wrong reasons lately, but a treatment of this nature by a party in which he was actively involved for over three decades has most apparently taught to him to look at greener pastures.

The Lok Morcha’s objectives and principles have not been outlined yet, but the purpose is clear. If this venture turns out to be the formation of yet another political unit/ party, it is not a surprise that Singh has expressed an interest in leading it.
