Jharigaon MGNREGS scam: BDO and clerk transferred, JE suspended
The multi-crore MGNREGS scam was traced by the OPYC president and Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Majhi during the DLVMC visit. In its connection, the junior engineer, BDO and the dealing clerk were suspended by the District Collector Sibabrata Dash.

IN A significant development, Jharigaon BDO Rabindra Nath Kanhar and the dealing clerk Parag Ranjan Lima were transferred in connection with the MGNREGS scam.  Junior Engineer Pabitra Mohan Panigrahi was suspended by the District Collector, Sibabrata Dash.

While Lima was transferred to Papadahandi, it is not immediately known where the BDO was posted. Since he has been on leave, the details of his transfer order were not available. However, it is speculated that he was transferred to an undisclosed department in Bhubaneswar.

The roots of the multi-crore MGNREGS scam was traced by the OPYC president and Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Majhi, during the DLVMC visit. He alleged that the highest amount of Rs 11.23 crore was spent in Jharigaon block of Nabarangpur district in the last fiscal 2010-11, but very few tangible assets, created under the scheme, could be seen there.

He alleged that Rs 7 crore out of the allotted amount had been misappropriated. Majhi had launched a relay strike in Jharigaon block, and then let the “Jail bharo” agitation across Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri, district.

Quoting a report of the Comptroller Auditor General (CAG) of India and the National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad, Majhi said there was large scale misappropriation of funds to the tune of 88 per cent in Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, and other districts of Odisha.
