J&K: Bye-elections in Hazratbal on May 7
The Hazratbal constituency in Kashmir with a total electorate of 86,668 voters in ready to go to Bye-polls on May 7. This constituency has been represented all along by NC since 1952. While Sadiqi won in 1957, 1962 and 1967, Ghulam Ahmed won in 1972
HAZRATBAL ASSEMBLY constituency in Kashmir province is all set to go to Bye-polls on May 7, along with Srinagar Parliamentary constituency. The Assembly seat has a total number of electorate 86,668 out of which 45,498 are male and 41,170 are female voters. The total number of polling stations is 119. The total number of voters in 2008 Assembly elections were 85,514.
This Assembly constituency was won by Dr Farooq Abdullah in 2008 when he defeated his nearest rival Asiea of PDP by a margin of 4,272 votes. While Dr Abdullah polled 11,041 votes, Asiea polled 6,769 votes. The total votes polled were 24,720 and the percentage was recorded at 28.91.
The Hazratbal constituency has been represented all along by NC since 1952 till 2002. While Peer Yehya Shah Sadiqi won in 1957, 1962 and 1967 elections, Sofi Ghulam Ahmed won in 1972. Hissam-ud-Din Banday was elected in 1977 and 1983 elections from this constituency. This constituency was represented by Mohammad Yaseen Shah in 1987 and Mohammad Syed Akhoon in 1996 respectively. In 2002, Mohammad Syed Akhoon again won the seat on NC ticket.
Dr Farooq Abdullah retaining Sonawar Assembly seat, resigned from this seat resulting a bye-election in the constituency.
