Along with a number of educational institutions, J&K will soon have one Central University and one IIM which have been sanctioned for the state by Centre. A lot of land is needed for this purpose as the Central University will alone need 500 acres.
In what could be termed as massive boost for higher education in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union government has sanctioned one Central University, One IIM, 11 OBC Degree Colleges, 18 Polytechnics and Five ITI’s for the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the locations for these are yet to be identified.
This information was given by Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik in Legislative Assembly on Thursday (August 27) in reply to a clubbed question.The Minister said that one Central University and one IIM have been sanctioned for J&K by government of India. He said 500 acres of land is required for Central University while as 200 acres of land for the IIM, adding that teams at the level of Government of India as well as state government have been constituted for identification and inspection of the chosen sites.
He said that three sites in Jammu and four sites in the valley have been identified having different dimensions. The state government has requested government of India to sanction two Central Universities for J&K, one each for Jammu division and Kashmir division, reaction of Government of India to the request of State government is awaited, he added.Meanwhile, Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports, R. S. Chib, while making a separate statement in the Legislative Assembly today about establishment of Central University in the State, said that keeping in view the aspirations of the people of the state two Central Universities need to be established in the state, one at Jammu and one in Kashmir.Chib said that the statement made by the four Cabinet Ministers in a press conference at Jammu in this regard conveys the same sentiment as was conveyed by the top level delegation headed by the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah during their meeting with the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Union Minister of Human Resources.The Minister said that the delegation which met the Prime Minister was assured that the regional aspirations will be considered. He said that three sites were examined in Jammu and three in Kashmir for establishing the Central University.
