Amid all the controversies surrounding it, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has bagged the annual 'Visitor's Award' for the Best University in the country.

The JNU has won the annual Visitor's Award for the Best University, 2017," Shamima Siddiqui, Deputy Press Secretary to President Pranab Mukherjee, said in a statement here on Thursday.

The President of India also announced the award on his official Twitter handle.

"Jawaharlal Nehru University has won the Visitor's Award for the 'Best University', 2017," the President wrote.

"The winners of Visitor's Award for 'Innovation' and 'Research' will receive a citation and cash award of Rs one lakh. The awards will be presented during a function as part of the 'Festival of Innovations'," the statement said.

The award that includes a citation and a trophy will be given by President Pranab Mukherjee to JNU Vice Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar at an event at the Rasthrapati Bhavan on March 6.

"Deepak Pant from Central University of Himachal Pradesh has won the Visitor's Award for `Innovation' while the Visitor's Award for `Research' has been jointly won by Shyam Sunder from Banaras Hindu University and Niranjan Karak from Tezpur University," a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said.

Last year, JNU had won the Visitor's Awards for "Research" and "Innovation". The Visitor's award was given to Rakesh Bhatnagar and the "Research" and "Innovation" award was won by Molecular Parasitology Group of the University.

The awards had been announced by President Mukherjee in 2014 in order to promote healthy competition among Central universities and also to motivate them to adopt world-class best practices.
